Language is a significant characteristic of all human beings. It is a part of culture seen as an excellent tool for cultural conservation. The worldwide network is comprised of numerous dialects and every one of these dialects is being utilized to recognize one language gathering or race . A society’s strength is anchored on the language unity. Therefore, the importance of Igbo language in attaining and sustaining Igbo identity cannot be over emphasized.
The Igbo language (also known as Ibo) is an African language, spoken in Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo among others, with approximately 18 million speakers. It ranks fifth in language levels based on the number of native speakers following Chinese, English, French and the likes . Furthermore, Igbo language is considered as one of the major languages of Nigeria. It is spoken in the South Eastern States of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, as well as in the northeast of the Delta State and in the southeast of the River State. Igbo is the main language of trade and commerce in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo state respectively.
Although Igbo is taught in Eastern Nigerian schools at all levels, English remains the lingual Franca of the country. It’s not very common to read and write in Igbo. Igbo is often substituted in many metropolitan regions by Nigerian Pidgin English or pure English. Igbo language is fast deteriorating as observed by. In our schools, markets, open spots, business divisions and most irritating at homes, individuals appear not to speak the language any longer, neglectful of the way that it is one of Igbo’s main types of identity.
“United Nations, through one of the Nigerian dailies, reported that by the year 2050 most of the world’s minor languages will be extinct because parents no longer communicate with their children in their mother tongues”.
